McKana Giants are superior strains developed for their very large flowers (3"), beautiful range of colors, and long graceful spurs. Excellent for rock gardens, perennial beds, and wildflower areas. Will grow and bloom well in dappled shade. Flowers add grace to fresh flower arrangements. All-America Selections winner, 1955.

 

Botanical Name: Aquilegia cultorum

Family: Ranunculaceae

Native: McKana Giants were bred from North American natives and species from abroad.

Hardiness: Perennial in USDA zones 3-9

Plant Dimensions: 24"–36" tall

Variety Information: 3" or longer spurred blossoms atop thin stems; blue, pink, maroon, purple, and bi-colors

Exposure: Full sun to part shade

Bloom Period: Spring to early summer

Attributes: Attracts Hummingbirds, Attracts Pollinators, Cut Flower, Deer Resistant

When to Sow Outside: 4 to 6 weeks before your average last frost date, 6 to 8 weeks before your average first frost date, or when soil temperature is 68°–75°F.

When to Start Inside: RECOMMENDED. 10 to 12 weeks before your average last frost date.

Days to Emerge: 21–25 days

Seed Depth: Surface

Seed Spacing: 3–4 seeds every 12"–24"

Thinning: When 2"–3" tall, thin to 1 every 12"–24"

Harvesting: For longest vase life, harvest in the morning, choosing stems with about half the flowers open.
